Introduction
The Bear Claw is the proud sibling of the Kodiak, building on its proven design while introducing several key refinements. A generously sized finger choil and a subtle groove near the base of the blade provide enhanced control and precision for detailed cutting tasks. The knife also features a partial false edge, with a section of the spine sharpened to increase versatility when needed.
With a blade measuring nearly 10 inches, the Bear Claw is designed as a true all-purpose outdoor knife. Its size and weight make it highly capable of chopping, batoning, and processing wood—essential tasks for bushcraft, survival, and camp use. Despite its large profile, the refined handle and finger choil allow for excellent control during finer work.
A crisp 90-degree spine is optimized for striking a ferro rod, making fire starting quick and reliable. The blade also excels at carving feather sticks and preparing other natural tinder, ensuring dependable performance in the outdoors.
The ergonomic G10 handle provides a secure and comfortable grip, even during extended chopping sessions or in wet conditions. Its design also allows the user to choke up into a forward grip, shifting the balance point for improved control and a more neutral feel during precision work.
Whether you're clearing trails, processing firewood, building camp, or heading into harsh winter conditions, the Bear Claw is built to perform as a dependable one-tool solution for demanding outdoor adventures.
Generation 2 Specifications
For Generation 2, the Bear Claw is constructed from 6.7 mm SKS51 tool steel, providing exceptional toughness, durability, and edge stability for heavy-duty outdoor use.
Introduction to SKS51 Steel
Japanese SKS51 steel, a high-carbon alloy tool steel renowned for its outstanding balance of toughness, flexibility, and wear resistance. Often compared to steels such as L6 and 80CrV2, SKS51 was originally developed for industrial cutting tools and saw blades that must withstand repeated impacts and heavy workloads without failure.
Unlike SK85, which is a plain high-carbon steel, SKS51 contains alloying elements such as nickel and chromium that significantly enhance its toughness and shock resistance. While SK85 offers good edge performance, it can be more susceptible to chipping under extreme stress. SKS51, on the other hand, is specifically valued for its ability to absorb impacts and resist damage during demanding tasks.
SKS51 is a Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS G4404) alloy tool steel widely used for manufacturing cutting tools and wear-resistant components. It is a high-carbon steel alloyed primarily with nickel (Ni) and chromium (Cr), which enhance its toughness, hardenability, and wear resistance compared with plain carbon tool steels.
SKS51 offers an excellent balance of high hardness, good toughness, and dimensional stability after heat treatment.
A typical chemical composition of SKS51 is:
- Carbon (C): 0.75–0.85%
- Silicon (Si): ≤0.35%
- Manganese (Mn): ≤0.50%
- Nickel (Ni): 1.30–2.00%
- Chromium (Cr): 0.20–0.50%
- Iron (Fe): Balance
