How to Use Diamond Emulsion for Knife Stropping

🧰 What You Need:

  • A leather strop, balsa strop, or MDF strop (dedicated to diamond spray/emulsion)

  • Diamond emulsion (commonly 1 micron, 0.5 micron, or even 0.25 micron)

  • Clean cloth or paper towel

  • Your knife, sharpened and burr-free

  •

🧼 Step 1: Prep the Strop

  • Make sure the strop surface is clean and dry.

  • If it’s been used before, wipe off any old residue or recondition if needed.

šŸ’§ Step 2: Apply the Diamond Emulsion

  • Shake the bottle if necessary.

  • Apply a light, even mist or small drops across the stropping surface.

  • Spread it evenly with a finger (wear gloves) or a clean cloth.

  • Let it dry for a few minutes until it bonds to the surface.

Note: Don’t oversaturate—too much can clog the strop or waste the abrasive.

šŸ”Ŗ Step 3: Strop Your Knife

  • Lay the knife at the proper edge angle (15–20°).

  • With the edge trailing, draw the blade spine-first across the strop.

  • Use light pressure, and keep your stroke smooth and even.

  • Flip sides, and repeat—10 to 20 passes per side is usually enough.

šŸ“ Choosing the Right Grit

  • 1 micron (ā‰ˆ16,000 grit) – For polishing and finishing most edges

  • 0.5 micron (ā‰ˆ30,000 grit) – For mirror finish or straight razors

  • 0.25 micron and below – Ultra-fine finishing, often used on specialty steels

āš ļø Tips & Warnings

  • Dedicate one strop per grit to avoid contamination.

  • Diamond emulsions cut faster than traditional compounds—go slow.

  • Don’t use on a soft leather strop unless it’s backed; too much give reduces control.
